The annual ranking done by US News & World Report are probably the most well-known of all. The ranking are based on peer assessment, student retention, faculty resources,student selectivity and other indicators, and the ranking are further broken down by type of colleges and universities, field of study, acceptance rate, graduation rate, class size, campus diversity and other criteria.

College ranking, no matter based on what indicators, are not absolute measures of quality and reputation. There have not been any commonly agreed upon measures among institutions of higher to allow for the comparison of teaching and reserch programs.

The overwhelming variety in size and purpose of institutions also makes the comparison between schools a daunting one for students, parents, and the colleges themselves. For example, public schools are obligated to admit a large percentage of in-state students based on their high school class ranks, thus inherently less selective. Factors such ad selectivity, acceptance rate, and retention rate are not as meaningful when comparing public vs. private schools.

In your search for the best school to apply, obviously you don't want simply to focus on the top-ranked schools. The colleges choice also consists of many other factors that cannot be reduced to quantitative numbers. These include the school's geographic location, campus life, the availability of financial aid, undergraduate research opportunities and internships or co-operative programs.
