How are admissions decisions made anyway?

Admissions decisions at different universities are made in different ways. At some universities, they are made by a committee whose members read enery application and reach a consensus decision. Some large state universities use formulas and computer programs to select their their students while some rely on a large team of admissions officers to review applications and select their students. In small liberal arts and many private colleges and universities, two admissions officers review applications for decision, and if there is no consensus, the admissions dean renders a final verdict.

A holistic admissions policy, pioneered by the University of california, takes into account more than just applicant test scores but also leadership positions and the location of the student's high school-in other words, the "whole" candidate. Indeed, all but one school in the Big 10 now practice some form of holistic admissions. Private universities,of course, have been doing this in some for years.
