How do I choose the right college or university?
International students tend to base their college selection solely on the college rankings and their reputations. There are other factors to consider as well. For example, you would also need to consider what’s going to be your major field of study and the strength of the programs the school can offer. Other factors such as geographical, cultural, financial, family ties, etc. may be just as important. For undergraduate studies, there is really little difference is you choose any one of the top 50 schools. This is especially true if you plan on going to graduate schools afterwards.
The right college or university does not mean there is only one school to choose from.. There are likely dozens of schools where you would excel in your studies and be happy. Look inward first – think hard on what you really want out of a college education, choose a college most suitable to you in the way you learn, one that will match your academic needs and ability, one that will offer you four years of memorable studies, exploring, expanding you horizon and making decisions on your career.
Talk to school counselors, friends, and family, people who know you well and know about higher education in the US and ask for their suggestions. Apply to a reasonable number of schools and be relaxed. Whether you end up at your first choice or last choice, it’s you and not the school you choose which will make all the difference.
