Hot Questions
What do the top US colleges and universities look for in an applicant?

First and foremost, top US universities look for academic performance and abilities. Your grades, class rank and an upward trend in performance are the most important academic factors.

They are knowledgeable about the profiles of high schools where graduates have traditionally gone to study in the US. They evaluate the strength of the school curriculum, and you will gain extra points for having taken beyond the core courses-honor classes, AP, IB, A-Level courses. In the absence of your high school profile, they will rely more on the High school graduation examination results in their admission screening.

Standardized test scores are the second most important factor, but they seldom overshadow your high school transcript.

The best grades and test scores, however, do not automatically earn an admission. Top schools also try to evaluate the applicant through your recommendations, your activities-services-awards profile, your personal essay(s) and interview. They look for such personal qualities as maturity, self-confidence, leadership, team play, enthusiasm, motivation, creativity, open-mindedness, contribution to diversity in the freshman class(e.g special talents in the arts or sports). These personal qualities can be more important in seeking admission to private colleges and universities.
